this article details how I manage my media collections (music, movies, shows, ..).

music*

my music library consists of all FLAC-encoded files, organized through directories: /$artist/$album/$tracknumber $song, for example: /Vegyn/The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions/10 Trust.flac.

music I collect comes in various formats (FLAC, DSD, MP3, AAC, OPUS, ..) and I always transcode it to FLAC, even if it is lossy. this is to, one, have a consistent library, and, two, allow proper tagging (mp3 tags suck). when transcoding from a very high sample rate (192kHz+) lossless source, I generally limit the sample rate to 96kHz, which is acceptable for me. my library is already 150GB, mostly 44.1khz CD rips, and the inaudible background noise at 30kHz a DSD recording provides does not meaningfully improve my experience.

metadata

for tagging, I use Kid3. I ensure that Title, Artist, Album Artist, Album, Date, Track Number, and Picture tags are set, and delete all others. I then use rsgain to add ReplayGain information to the tracks, and LRCGET to add or write lyric information.

listening

on my computers, I use Quod Libet or Navidrome, and for mobile I use substreamer, or I transfer my favorite songs and play them using Auxio.

movies & shows*

I just have all my movies in one directory, and organize my shows by /$title/$season/$title.$season$episode, for example: /Mr. Robot/Season 4/Mr. Robot.S04E07.mkv. to make renaming multiple episodes easier, I use nnn's rename feature.
